#FreeAtLast. "Wow, wow, I am so fortunate to see Martin Luther King Memorial. So many people won't see it, but I made this dream come true", "Martin Luther King is a huge inspiration to me. Because of him, I want to become a Civil Rights attorney, challenging injustice people of color face in this country". One week ago, I went to Dr King Memorial in Washington DC and collected these testimonials. Now in Atlanta, I am in Martin's city. #BlackHeroes Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and Medgar Evers were on the forefront of the fight for equal rights within American society. They put their lives at risk for what they believed in. And none of them outlived the 1960s. MLK was shot at 39, in 1968. He is buried here, in Atlanta, alongside his wife Coretta. MALCOLM X (bottom left), was shot at 39, in 1965. He is buried in Ferncliff Cemetery, NY, next to his wife Betty. And MEDGAR EVERS was shot at 37, in 1963. He is buried in Arlington cemetery, VA. #GoingForward "Oh man, Martin Luther King, he means struggle, endurance, peace, conflict, overcome. He means you can do anything, you just have to set your mind to step over the obstacles and understand violence isn't the way. That's what he is to me. I am African American so I go through things that other people don't go through. MLK gives me the courage to keep going forward. We've come a long long way from not being able to sit at the table or ride the busses, but we've still have a long way to go, and we want to make sure we don't go backwards. To do so, we need to know about African American history. That's why I take my daughter and granddaughter here". #FreedomRiders In May 1961, a KKK-affiliated mob attacked a non-segregated bus in Anniston, Alabama. Blacks and whites in the bus were part of the Freedom Riders, a non-violent movement protesting against the segregation in interstate transportation in the South. The white mob slashed the tires and set the bus on fire, shouting "Burn them alive". None of the Freedom riders miraculously perished on that day, but they were badly hurt. Riders from another bus were also badly beaten the same day when reaching Birmingham, Alabama. To get to New Orleans, their final destination, they flew from Birmingham. But freedom riders did not stop here. In the next few months, 400 of them were imprisoned continuing the action. True heroes. #Bombigham The most segregated city of the US was Birmingham, Alabama. During the Civil Rights movement, 6 kids were killed there on Sept 15th, 1963, because they were black. 4 girls died in the morning bombing of 16th Street Baptist church, and 2 boys were shot that evening. It was 3 weeks after Martin Luther King "I have a dream speech". The girls are memorialized in Kely Ingram park, with the 16th street church in the background. And a window from the church, broken in the bombing, is on display in the very interesting Birmingham civil rights museum. #OnThisDay in 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give her seat to a white man in a Montgomery bus. As a black woman, she was arrested for her action, then illegal in segregated Alabama. A 381-day bus boycott followed, led by the local pastor, a man named Martin Luther King Jr. #RosaParks passed away in 2005, 50 years after her successful boycott. All her life, she fought for civil rights and social justice. Rosa Parks was inducted in the Civil Rights Walk of Fame in Atlanta (pic 2). #hitchhiker As a hitchhiker, I was moved by this picture of a protester during the Montgomery bus boycott. The boycott was ignated by Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King. Black protesters then hitched rides to go places or organized a carpooling system. 381 days later, the Supreme Court declared segregation in public transport unconstitutional. And 64 years later, African American give me rides across the South.
